According to Professor Frohman, Israel Prize Laureate, researcher, inventor and founder of Intel Israel, Israel has had only two real leaders since gaining independence: David Ben Gurion and Menachem Begin.
Professor Frohman spoke at the Jerusalem College of Engineering (JCE) on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009, at the first of several gatherings entitled: 60 Minutes with JCE’s President, sponsored by the Jerusalem College of Engineering along with JCE’s Alumni Association. At these gatherings, JCE President, Uzi Wexler, will moderate discussions with guest speakers, key leaders, engineers and scientists, at the College.
At this first gathering, Professor Dov Frohman spoke about his recently published book: Leadership the Hard Way. The book offers a rare look into leadership and discussion centered upon whether leadership is something that can be taught. Professor Frohman asserted his belief that leadership is measured during a crisis and is activated by past trial and error experience. “The book does not instruct on how to become a leader,” the professor humorously commented, “which is why it is not a best seller.”
When asked why in Israel few leaders in academia and industry enter politics – a realm where leaders are lacking – Professor Frohman replied that success in one field does not necessarily guarantee success in others.
Among those present at the “60 Minutes” event were JCE students, faculty and staff, Intel Israel workers, and JCE Board members including former CEO of Intel Israel Amir Elstein, currently Chairman of JCE’s Board and Chairman of Tower Semiconductor Ltd.; former CEO of Intel Israel Qiryat Gat, Yonathan Wand, currently CEO of Numonyx Israel – a subsidiary of Intel; Israel prize laureate Professor Yehudith Birk, Chair of JCE’s Executive Committee; Arie Levin, CEO of AVX Israel Ltd.; former Israeli ambassador to Ireland, Zvi Gabay; former MK Professor Shimon Shetreet; and JCE Board member Professor Ariel Cohen.
