MIT and JCE Collaborate

JCE is the first college to join a list of companies and universities that host the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) student interns in Israel. MIT’s MISTI-Israel program trains and sends outstanding MIT students to Israel to carry out their internships. The MIT-Israel program also focuses on cross-cultural training and supporting collaborative research opportunities between MIT and Israel. In fact, after participating in this program, there is the possibility of MIT and JCE students collaborating on future joint projects.

JCE’s new collaboration with MIT, ranked #1 in undergraduate engineering studies in the US, is a unique opportunity for MIT students to be hosted by the College, while actually interning at leading high-tech companies, namely Teva, Intel and AVX. JCE is providing the framework for these internships and arranging the match with the high-tech company, while also providing guidance to students and a social framework through which MIT students will be able to learn and network.

Out of 31 participants in the MISTI-Israel program, 3 are being hosted by JCE this summer:

Sandra Abago is a rising sophomore majoring in chemical-biological engineering and materials science and engineering at MIT. Born and raised in Uganda, the evidently chatty 19-year old says the weather in Israel reminds her a lot of her hometown, Kampala. Her internship this summer at Teva Pharmaceuticals in Petach Tikva involves parameterization and optimization of the drug manufacturing process scale up. "The drug in question is Nilotinib,” Sandra says, “and my main role right now is to manipulate the effect of solvents in the formation of new patent free polymorphs during the reactions."

"During my stay here, I have found myself inevitably falling in love with the culture, traditions and the people who make this lovely country even more beautiful. I am very grateful for the MISTI-Israel program for giving me the opportunity to come here and work at the world's biggest generic medicine industry but also for the MIT-JCE collaboration for making my stay here easier, more enjoyable and somewhat eventful; not to mention the amazing people at JCE. I can't express how glad I am that there's such a collaboration which helped me settle in easily and make friends in Jerusalem."

Pangus Ho is a 20 year old student, originally from Indonesia. Pangus is a sophomore majoring in computer science and physics. His internship is taking place at Intel in Jerusalem at which his job includes wrapping a firmware code so that it follows the accepted standard, and writing some samples to demonstrate its usage. The firmware Pangus is working with is Intel Active Management Technology (AMT), a hardware-based technology for remotely managing and securing PCs out-of-band.

“I've been absolutely satisfied with my internship in Israel,” Pangus says, “it's the best summer I've had in my life. I'm grateful that JCE had selected several awesome students to hang around with us. They've been really helpful and warm (especially Russel and Yoed), and very fun to talk with.” Pangus continues: “I'm glad I was placed in Intel, once I was told that Intel Israel had the best working environment in the country, and I think it's true!”

Sophia Lee is a 19 year old freshman who studies chemical engineering at MIT. During her internship at AVX in Jerusalem, Sophia is working on a project that involves changing the process through which wax is removed and components are cleaned during production. “My aim is to make the process more effective and efficient, says Sophia, “while integrating a more safe and friendly solvent.”

“The collaboration with JCE has afforded me the amazing opportunity to get experience in a company that I could not develop simply working in a university chemistry lab, while also introducing me to Israeli students with similar interests and passions to my own.”
