Third Graduating Class, Advanced Materials Engineering

I decided to study for my bachelor’s degree at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in a program that combines exact sciences (physics, chemistry) and quickly discovered that I had the ability and motivation for research work.  Unfortunately, economic circumstances prevented me from continuing studying at the University, so that the College (thanks to special scholarships) became an alternative framework for me to complete my first degree studies, which are an essential stage in starting my research career.

I am currently studying for Ph.D. in materials science at the Weitzman Institute in Rehovot.  Students from various research institutes from Israel and overseas study at the Weitzman Institute and, in my estimation, I can say that the study program at the College provides broader, more varied and up-to-date knowledge than most of these institutions, knowledge that gives me an important advantage, both in coping with courses given at the Institute and in my laboratory research work.

My final project was also performed at the Weitzman Institute in the Materials and Surfaces Department under the guidance of Professor Daniel Wagner.  The project dealt with investigating the mechanical properties of nano-pipes, which are a new form of solid material recently discovered.  The unusual properties of this group of materials allow the building of complex materials having engineering properties greatly exceeding those of materials now in use.  Since the short time since their discovery, a need has been created for basic research of their properties in order to enable their quick and efficient application at industrial scale.
